Caftan Delight

Pattern Review: Butterick B6559

You know, when you come across a pattern that works? That’s exactly how I felt with this caftan pattern. It’s simple, versatile, and comes with four different design options—so of course, I had to dive right in.

I cut mine from the L–XL–XXL size range, trimming it down to a large.

Version A

My first project with this pattern was a top (option A) using a rayon I already had sitting in my stash. It came together quickly, and the fabric gave it a lovely drape—perfect for an easy, throw-on piece.

Version B

Next up, I made version B. This one was from a Satin Rayon Modal, and oh my goodness—the fabric is so soft and silky, it feels dreamy against the skin. Technically, this version is supposed to be a shorter take on option D, but since I’m on the shorter side, it basically looks like a full-length caftan on me. I also skipped the tie detail, which gave it a nice, simple flow.

My Thoughts

The instructions were pretty straightforward. I’d say a total beginner might have to pause here and there, but if you’ve done a bit of sewing before, you probably won’t even need to read them twice. My favourite detail? The French seams on the shoulders—they’re worth the effort because they look so polished.

Now, let’s talk facings. I’m usually not a fan (I almost always prefer binding), but I went ahead and did the facings as suggested this time. They turned out fine, but for the next round, I might revert to my trusty binding method.

Will I Make It Again?

Absolutely. In fact, I can already see myself making more—both tops and longer versions. It’s one of those patterns that’s easy, wearable, and lets the fabric shine. Both versions I’ve tried are comfortable, stylish, and easy to wear. I can already see myself making more in different fabrics and lengths—it’s a pattern with a lot of potential.
