Smart Italian Style Coat
Pattern Review: Vogue V8346
I created this coat just before the onset of COVID-19, as I’d never owned a high-quality coat and had planned a winter trip to New Zealand that same year. Unfortunately, my travel plans were canceled, but the coat has become a fantastic staple in my wardrobe.
While I adored version B of the jacket, I didn’t fully consider how it would complement my body shape when done up. Ultimately, I decided against adding buttons because I suspected the look wouldn’t suit me, and I didn’t want to commit before experimenting with the jacket closed.
Being a Vogue pattern presented some challenges (these patterns are well known to have their challenges), and I needed to employ some creative sewing skills. I opted not to include pockets, although I do miss them. Years ago, I had an off-the-rack coat, and every season, when I pulled it out again, I would find all sorts of things left in the pockets.
This jacket is made from Italian boiled wool, making it the most expensive project I’ve undertaken. However, when compared to a ready-to-wear version, it only cost me a third of the price to make, and it’s fully lined.
I feel proud wearing this coat. Not only have I made a quality coat, but I am getting loads of positive comments whenever I wear it. It makes sewing my own clothes even more rewarding.
The pattern I used is Vogue V8346 (coat B), which can still be found online in various places.
